Scriptures about Prayer
These are some of Ann M. Wolf’s favorite scriptures about Prayer. Using your concordance or Bible resource link on the internet, share verses which are special to you when answering the questions found at the base of the Lesson.
We begin with a prayer which Jesus Himself prayed for us from John 17:1-26 (KJV)…
Verse 8 “For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.”
Verse 9 “I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.”
Verse 10 “And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.”
Verse 11 “And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.”
Verse 12 “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.”
Verse 13 “And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.”
Verse 14 “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”
Verse 15 “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.”
Verse 16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”
Verse 17 “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.”
Verse 18 “As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”
Verse 19 “And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.”
Verse 20 “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;”
Verse 21 “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”
Verse 22 “And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:”
Verse 23 “I in them and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou has sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.”
Verse 26 “And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
These Scriptures are taken from the King James Version of the Bible…
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (KJV): “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
2 Thessalonians 1:11 (KJV): “Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faith with power.”
Ephesians 6:18 (KJV): “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
Philippians 4:6 (KJV): “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God; And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Colossians 1:9-12 (KJV): “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.”
Conclusion: So…may your prayer time be fruitful, may your heart be filled with peace and may we all…always remember the love, comfort, and power to change a life, that is found in faithful prayer.

Three Ways to Find Scriptures:
- Concordance: A concordance is a special book which holds alphabetical listings of words by which you can find where those words are written in the Bible. For instance, if you want to find verses about “Love,” look it up and you will also see all or most of the places in Scripture where “Love” appears.
- Bible Search: Many Bibles contain additional resources following the last Chapter of the New Testament such as a synopsis of each Book of the Bible, a Concordance, Biblical Maps, etc. Take a look and see what your Bible holds which might be helpful in the future.
- Online Searching: This page includes an embedded verse locater, courtesy of Bible Gateway; type in any phrase or word and options will come up from among verses of the Bible. You can also use any search engine to look up Scriptures. Just specify a phrase, word, verse, chapter, or version of the Bible you wish to read from and many sources will come up to explore.
